According to Englishclub.com, vocabulary refers to all of the words used to create a language (2015). Vocabulary is the meaning behind a word, the word definition and how the word can be used to create meaning in different contexts in the world we live in (Diamond & Gutlohn, 2006).
Vocabulary in content reading can be challenging for students to learn and understand. When a student reads a text, there may be a number of vocabulary words that are unfamiliar to them. If these vocabulary words are not understood, a student may skip over the word in their reading and a "roadblock" to understanding the text is created. In order to clear the way of any potential roadblock making experiences, it is important that students have opportunities to see, hear, practice and use vocabulary in all classroom subjects. It is essential that students know vocabulary in context in order to truly understand and make meaning of what they are reading. “To succeed with content area text, adolescents need to build their vocabularies as they build conceptual understanding” (Miller & Veatch, 2011).
