Semantic maps, or otherwise referred to as graphic organizers, are maps made up of words. They are drawn diagrams of vocabulary words used to visually display the meaning of words and make connections between words that relate to one another (Zorfass & Gray, 2014). Graphic organizers help students identify, understand and recall vocabulary and the meaning of the words they read in text. Semantic mapping is “…a visual and structured strategy for vocabulary development and knowledge expansion displayed in categories of words in relation to other words” (Boon Yih, 2011).
Students can use a blank map or simply draw their own. Maps can come in a variety of designs as seen in the pictures here. There are also easy print out worksheets available where they are pre-drawn and ready to go for students.There are a variety of resources found online.
